Mostar

Herzegovina, Neretva river valley

When I think of Mostar, the first thing that comes to mind is the Old Bridge, Šantić and the song "Emina," the turquoise-blue and ice-cold Neretva River, the sweet and sour pomegranate, and the lyrics of the song by Dino Merlin: "I will be gray, I will be old, but my Mostar is forever young..."

Mostar is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, largest, and most popular cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, known for its rich history and stunning architecture. Situated in the valley of the cold and beautiful Neretva River, Mostar is a must-visit destination for anyone touring Bosnia and Herzegovina. While the city is famous for the Old Bridge, there are many other landmarks that testify to its long and fascinating history. The name comes from the soldiers who guarded the Old Bridge, called "mostari." The largest number of tourists visit Mostar during the summer months, from June to September, when the city hosts many cultural and entertainment events. However, visitors who prefer smaller crowds come in other parts of the year, when the city offers its own kind of magic, especially in the autumn or spring. Let’s now describe what you can see in one day.

The Old Bridge

Until 1566, the Old Bridge was first called the "Sultan Suleiman Bridge," then the "Great Bridge," before finally being named the Old Bridge as we know it today. The Old Bridge is one of the most famous attractions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most recognizable symbols of Mostar. It was built in the 16th century and is a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture in Europe, which is why it is under UNESCO protection. The Old Bridge is about 24 meters high and made of stone. It spans the Neretva River, which flows through the city and connects the two sides, the east and west. The name of the Neretva River translates as “God’s gift” in our language. Neretva has an average annual temperature of seven degrees, making it one of the coldest rivers in the world. The bridge is also famous for traditional diving into the Neretva River. This tradition dates back to the time when the bridge was built and is now a major attraction for tourists and visitors.

Introduction

Kriva Ćuprija (The Crooked Bridge)

Kriva Ćuprija was built in the 16th century. This fascinating stone bridge was constructed in the Ottoman style and is one of the best-preserved examples of architecture from that period in the Balkans.

Introduction

The bridge spans the Radobolja River and is recognizable for its characteristic curvature, which gave it its name. The Crooked Bridge is only 8 meters long, but its history and beauty are impressive. Built in 1558, it is believed to have been commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent. The bridge served as a connection between the old market areas on both sides of the river. It’s made of stone and has a single arch with 12 steps. The curvature is not accidental but an engineering trick that allows it to adapt to the terrain’s slope and narrow passages. Tourists can visit the bridge and walk on it, as well as enjoy the unforgettable view of the Radobolja River and the surrounding buildings. The best time to visit Kriva Ćuprija is in the spring and autumn when the temperatures are more pleasant, and the city is less crowded.

The Franciscan Church of St. Peter and Paul

The Franciscan Church is one of Mostar’s landmarks, and with its imposing 107-meter-high bell tower, it’s an integral part of the city’s skyline. Originally built in 1866, the church was rebuilt after being damaged during the war in the 1990s. Next to the church is the Franciscan Monastery, founded in the 14th century, which is still in operation today. The church itself is modern, with a simple yet elegant design, and its interior features stained glass windows and decorations.
